Days in Horse Country – Trailer Maintenance 
As the better weather has now arrived, today is a good day
to check your trailer; the safety and comfort of your horses depends on it.
Follow these steps to make sure your trailer is in good working order and road worthy:
- Check tires to ensure that they have at least ¼ inch (6mm) of tread.
- Evaluate tires for proper inflation, including your spare.
- Make sure your jack and safety triangle are in good working order.
- Examine your floorboards to ensure that there are no weak or rotten spots.
- Check all screws, nails, and bolts to make sure that they are secure.
- Verify that all lights are working. This includes the tail lights, brake lights, directional signals, marker lights, and interior and exterior lights.
- Inspect hitch welds, safety chain welds and snaps.
- Grease the hitch ball if required.
As with most things in life, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It’s better to have taken the time now to inspect and repair your trailer, than to be stranded on the side of the road with your horses in tow.
