365 Days in Horse Country – Take  a Lesson

Whether you have been riding your entire life or are new to the hobby, everyone can benefit from taking a lesson.

If you thing you have all the skills you need to ride well and the idea of taking a lesson seems silly to you, consider this: Even Olympic equestrians who compete at the highest levels in the world still take riding lessons.  In other words, no matter how much you know, someone else knows more than you; at least when it comes to riding.

If you haven’t had a lesson in a long time, find a good instructor in your area and make an appointment for a single ride in your discipline of choice.

Tell the instructor you just want a single lesson right now to gauge your riding level and get a sense of where you need to improve.  If possible, ride the instructor’s horse instead of your own.  You learn more with every new horse you ride because each horse is an individual, and feels and responds differently to each rider.

Do not be surprised if you find that after your lesson, you are yearning for more.  The better you ride, the better you feel in the saddle, and the more you enjoy your time with your horse.
