365 Days in Horse Country – Equicaching

One of the newest sports to hit the world of North American trail riding is equicaching, which is essentially a treasure hunt on horseback.  With the help of a global positioning system (GPS), riders search for caches hidden by other riders.  The catches can contain anything from money to coupons to books to horse shampoo.  You only discover what’s in the cache when you find it.  You then put something in the cache to preplace what you took so the next equicacher has something of value waiting for them.

Caches are listed on equicaching websites, along with their GPS coordinates and a description of the cache containers.  Rules dictate that all chaches be placed within 10 feet (3 m) of an established horse trail an in an area that allows equestrian use.  A log book is included within each cache, and finders must sign the log to indicate thay found the cache.

The sport is catching on among trail riders, and caches are being hidden in parks and national forests all around North America.
